One such ruin is The Ruins, often referred to as the “Taj Mahal” of Negros Occidental. This magnificent mansion was built by Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson in memory of his beloved wife Maria Braga. Legend has it that during World War II, when Japanese forces were about to invade Bacolod City, Don Mariano ordered his workers to burn down the mansion so it wouldn’t fall into enemy hands. Today, all that remains are towering columns covered in ivy and a beautiful garden surrounding them. Another notable ruin is Balay Negrense or Victor F. Gaston Ancestral House.

Built in 1897 by sugar baron Victor Fernandez Gaston, this ancestral house showcases the opulence enjoyed by wealthy families during the sugar boom era. Visitors can explore various rooms filled with antique furniture and artifacts from a time long gone. The Daku Balay or Bernardino Jalandoni Museum offers another glimpse into Bacolod’s past. Originally built as a wedding gift for Bernardino Jalandoni’s bride Rosario Locsin, this mansion now serves as a museum showcasing vintage photographs, clothing, jewelry, and other personal belongings belonging to prominent families from Bacolod’s golden age. These ruins not only provide visitors with an opportunity to step back in time but also serve as reminders of Bacolod’s resilience throughout history.

Despite facing challenges like war and natural disasters over the years, these structures have managed to withstand the test of time. Apart from their historical significance, these ruins have also become popular venues for events such as weddings, concerts, and art exhibits.
